Scholarships & The Lahainaluna High School Foundation
When the Foundation was created it was not predicted that scholarships would become a very important and large part of the Foundation’s activities, but they are now. Early on, the Foundation received a large anonymous donation designated specifically to scholarship endowment funds for the purpose of offering scholarships to graduating students.
Please see the News and Events Page for all the Scholarship Winners as well.

For the 2008 graduation season, Lahainaluna High School Foundation awarded 26 scholarships to graduating seniors, prior graduates and a teacher. Nearly $55,000.00 in scholarships was presented by the Foundation at Lahainaluna High School’s recent Scholarship Awards Program held at the Royal Lahaina Hotel on May 21st. Andrew Kutsunai, Scholarship Chairman for the past 6 years, was elated. “The Foundation’s developing vision statement is “a superior educational experience for all Lahainaluna students: “ I ‘ike po’okela na ‘opio a pau o Lahainaluna” (All Lahainaluna students shall receive a superior high school experience). This is moving us toward that vision!”
In 2005, 2006, and 2007, the Foundation awarded a scholarship to a Lahainaluna teacher for continuing education. This is a very real way to have scholarships impact Lahaina’s future. A local family, the Hotta family, has endowed the Y. Hotta Endowed Scholarship with preference for Boarders of Lahainaluna High School. Currently, the Foundation also receives additional general donations designated for scholarships as well as those that have been regularly given by organizations, individuals and other foundations such as the Hawaii Community Foundation.

The Foundation works closely with the Hawaii Community Foundation, and several students last year received scholarships that were specifically donated by part-time residents who wanted to make a difference in their community. We have a Scholarship Committee, chaired by Andrew Kutsunai, that works with the donor regarding the purpose of the scholarship and selection criteria and then selects the applicant with input from other committee members.

Last year the Lahainaluna High School Foundation distributed $22,000.00 in scholarships, and since 2002 have distributed over $57,000.00 to Lahainaluna High School graduates.
All of the endowed scholarship money and restricted endowment accounts are with the Hawaii Community Foundation and are being managed by their managers. Up to date, the Foundation has approximately $125,000.00 in Designated Restricted Endowment Funds for scholarships.
